How Dogs Work is a cute, cartoonized encyclopedia covering everything from dog shows and world records to development and training issues. At 160 pages of mostly pictures, it’s not a very deep book and doesn’t go into very much detail on anything.
Still, the book was enjoyable and had some fascinating facts in it I didn’t know. If you have a child interested in dogs, this would be a great intro book for them. I laughed at a few of the drawings that perfectly summed up training a stubborn dog or the “boot scoot.”
My one critique of this book might be the title itself. “How Dogs Work” makes me think it is a break down of dog behavior. If you do this, your dog will probably do this sort of thing. While it does cover body language, it also covers almost everything else. I don’t feel it is really about how dogs work at all.
Nevertheless, it’s a fun little romp about dog facts, and worth reading or gifting to a child curious about dogs.
Final Thoughts
As with many of the shorter books I’ve read, How Dogs Work doesn’t really need a lot of detail. It’s a fun and light-hearted encyclopedia of dog ownership, but not deep or life changing. I read this book as part of my library reading challenge. If you’d like to look at some of the other reviews, you can do so here.
