When I was a little girl, I had the horse version of the Dogs book by DK. I remember spending hours pouring over that book, memorizing horse anatomy, coat colors, and exotic breeds of horses. All those memories came flooding back when I paged through this stunningly beautiful book on dogs.
Dogs is a breed encyclopedia, that gives you details on hundreds of different breeds of dogs. Some of them you might never have heard of, others are classics that will leave you nodding in recognition.
As a dog groomer, I was particularly interested in reading this book because I’ve seen quite a few rare breeds of dogs. I confirmed to myself how a bichon frise haircut looks like, marveled at what a Coton de Tulear looks like unmatted, and admired the natural tails and ears shown on normally docked breeds.
The book even has a section for designer breeds, where you can see favorites like the goldendoodle and the cockapoo. Although some people stress these are not real breeds, the fact is it is a very common purposeful mix. I feel the inclusion of them was appropriate.
This is a great book for someone who isn’t sure of the breed they want yet, so they can look at all their options. Also a great gift for dog-crazy kids who will spend their waking lives obsessing over each and every breed.
It goes without saying that I loved this book. I didn’t see any glaring errors either, although I could only reference breeds I’m more familiar with. This is a very enjoyable book. I read this book for my reading challenge. You can check out the rest of the books I read here.
