Leia looks alertly up against a plain pink backdrop.

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed out there, and with that tiny size comes a super tiny bladder. Unfortunately, that tiny bladder means that potty accidents are a bit more common with Chihuahuas than with other breeds.

Dogs also rely on their sense of smell to find a good place to go to the bathroom. The best places are where they or other dogs have gone before—a big problem when it is your carpet that was soiled.

This article goes over how to clean a pee accident in such a way that your dog no longer feels the need to go there.

Step 1: Blot The Pee

When she barked at the door, I thought she was barking at the neighbor dog. >.<

Get a rag you don’t mind having pee on, and soak as much of the accident up as you can. In this photo the pee accident is on a rug, but if it’s on carpet the pee stain likely goes all the way down to the padding underneath the carpet.

You can help soak that up by getting a clean, dry rag and standing on it. The pressure helps to wick up pee deep down in the carpet.

Step 2: Lavishly Spray Cleaner

Your average carpet cleaner will not work here. You must get some kind of enzymatic cleaner if you don’t want your dog repeatedly and insistently peeing in the exact same spot. Enzymatic cleaners break down the urine so even your dog’s keen sense of smell can’t pick it up again.

Thoroughly spray the affected area. It’s important that it soaks down through the carpet into the pad as well, which is why liberal spraying is necessary.

Step 3: Let Sit for 15 minutes

The enzymes need time to work, so if you blot it up right away it won’t properly clean the mess. Let it soak in for 15 minutes.

Step 4: Blot the Cleaner

Now you’re going to repeat the first step, but this is the last time! Soak up as much of the moisture as you can and stand on it if necessary to help get that last drop of moisture out.

Congratulations, the mess has been properly cleaned!
