Pets is an adorable documentary celebrating the human-animal bond, currently available on Disney+. The documentary features adorable kids who talk about pets, interspersed with stories of adults and how their lives were transformed through animals.
The stories are as different as they can possibly be, with people from different countries and with different animals talking about what they do and why they do it. Pet rescue is a common theme, as well as wildlife rehabilitation.
Some of these stories are very hard to listen to. As we all tragically come to know when we fall in love with an animal, their lives are generally shorter than ours. In some cases, the animals rescued are on “borrowed time” and live a very short time before passing away.
Most of the time, the producer of the show does a great job of cutting back to kids talking about their pets to give you an emotional break after these topics.
Not Very Structured
I watched the entire 79-minute documentary, even though toward the end I found my mind wandering. The actual stories themselves are powerful, the segments with viral video in it made me laugh, but the documentary felt more like scrolling my phone than watching a professional film.
Each subject, linked only together by the human animal-bond, flirts for your attention just a few minutes before it’s the next topic. While it’s a great general overview of how humans are around the animals we love, it doesn’t have a great deal of focus.
I would have liked a stronger narrative linking all these pets together, a question that needed answered, a thought that needed fulfilled. I didn’t really get this.
Decent, but not Amazing
This is a great show to put on while you’re cleaning the house or need some background noise. It has clips that capture your attention, tons of adorable pets, and some powerful stories. I enjoyed my time watching it, but I’d enjoy it more if it had set out to answer an ambitious question, or provoke our thoughts on what it means to love animals—something along those lines.
Although it wasn’t profound, I did find the story enjoyable and the show worth watching. “Pets” is currently only available on Disney+ if you wish to watch it yourself.
