A scene from Alfie and the clippers of doom. Alfie is running from the clippers here.

Chihuahuas can be a little dramatic about nail trims. At best, a fearful dog screaming and crying as it’s carried off for a nail cut is embarrassing. At worst, the dog is banished from groom shops and must be sedated for nails.

This is a terrible thing. Dogs need to have their nails clipped at least once a month, and more often is better. When something they hate happens so often, it can fill their life–and yours–with dread.

It doesn’t have to be that way. It’s possible to change your dog’s mind about nail trims using classical conditioning. Classical conditioning involves having your dog associate different parts of the nail trim with a positive experience, and it needs to be broken up into steps so small your dog doesn’t mind it. Even if you’re just showing him the clippers from across the room and tossing a treat.

We talked about how to help your dog overcome their fear of nail trims here, but wanted to show what this might look like. Below is a comic strip we made, “Alfie and the Clippers of Doom.”

Alfie is a chihuahua who hates having his nails cut, but after being banished from groom shops, his owner decides to try and fix it. This is his story, and I hope it shows what we tried to say in our earlier post.

A chihuahua is running across the living room screaming. "My name is Alfie," the chihuahua says. In the next panel is a picture of a short haired lady jumping over the living room table with a pair of nail clippers. "This is mom." In the final panel is a close up of the nail clippers. "And these are the clippers of doom.
In the first panel Alfie is hiding under the couch. In the second panel, Mom tries to reach under to get him. In the third panel, Alfie growls at her. CHOMP! Mom is crying. "I bet you're wondering how we got to this point."
A long time ago, Alfie is in a pet store. He is jumping up onto a basket of bones to smell them. "This place smells amazing!"

Suddenly, two huge feet come into view. "Wait - Who are you?!"

He unexpectedly finds himself being carried. "Where are we going? Where's mom?? What do you want?"
The groomer is holding Alfie's paw. "We barely know each other and you want to hold hands?"

SNIP! The groomer cuts a claw.

"OW!!" Says Alfie.
Alfie is being carried back to mom, but he doesn't feel so good. That was a terrible experience. "From that moment on, I decided nail trims were never happening again."

Alfie is shrieking over the groomers shoulder as he is being carried off. "I screamed..."

Alfie kicks the clippers out of the groomer's hand. "I kicked."

Alfie is squirming on his back screaming and kicking the groomer. "Scratched."

Alfie is muzzled with a demonic gaze. "What ever it took."
All the groomers shout at Mom, "WE QUIT!"

Mom leaves with Alfie. Alfie is proud, nose in the air. "I win!!"

Uh-oh. Mom has the clippers now.
Alfie growls at the Clippers of Doom. "I can't believe mom brought those in the house!"

Mom is walking away from Alfie who is now in a kennel, stewing. There is a bandaid on her hand. "They even jailed me unfairly."

"Little did I know, everything was about to change."

The mom is reading a book on the couch. "Desensitization, huh?" she says.
Mom is walking into the bedroom. "Alfie" she sings. Alfie is under the blankets, he looks alarmed as she walks in.

Mom tosses Alfie a treat!

Alfie comes out of the blanket and looks at the treat. "Treats??"

He takes them, but looks weary. "This is a trap," he thinks. Mom just looks angelic.
Mom is giving Alfie treats again. "Every day, mom does this."

"She shows me the clippers." Mom shows me the clippers.

"...and then tosses me a treat." Alfie and mom are sitting on the couch together. Mom shows Alfie the clippers and then tosses me a treat.

Admittedly, the clippers do get less threatening over time.
"It became a kind of game."

Mom shows the clippers to Alfie a bit closer.

"look at the clippers..."

Alfie stares at the clipper very closely.

"And get a snack!" Alfie eats the treat gloomily.

"I'm not sure when I stopped hating them."

Alfie looks at the clippers, and he looks glad.

"But one day, I did!" Alfie races to his mom and the clippers.

"And then..."

Mom touches Alfie with the clippers!
Alfie looks at mom, perplexed. "Did you just...touch me with the clippers of doom?"

Mom, a sweat drop on her head, shows Alfie a piece of bacon. "I have bacon."

Alfie thinks about it a moment. "Okay!!" he says, stars in his eyes.
"Mostly, I was fine with the touches," Alfie says as mom touches his legs. "But one time, mom went too far."

Suddenly, mom touches his feet.

"HELP! DON'T TOUCH MY FEET!" Alfie leaps back, sending mom and the clippers flying back in shock.

"At least mom listens."

Mom is touching Alfie with the clippers much higher up. Alfie is not happy.

"A hundred treats later, we agreed that foot touching was okay."

Alfie is relaxed and stretched across mom's lap.
"Mom kept finding new ways to touch my feet.

Alfie has learned new tricks, high five, shake, and dance!

"It turns out, having your feet touched isn't the worst thing ever after all."

Mom touches Alfie's foot with the clippers, while he sits by angelically.

"My relationship with the Clippers of Doom had changed."
PLOP! Alfie has been set on the counter. He wobbles as he looks down at the floor. My, it's very high up! Better lay down. No...it's still to high.

"HELP!" he yells. "Too scary for bacon?" Mom asks.

Stars shine in Alfie's eye. "No!" he says.

"Apparently, VIPs eat bacon on tables!"
Alfie is completely happy about standing on the table, being touched on his feet, and the clippers touching him. Mom goes ahead and cuts a nail!

Alfie stares at mom. Mom stares at Alfie.
"So...isn't this the part where you give me a treat?" Alfie asks.

"Yes of course!" Mom says, hurrying to give a treat.

Alfie is happily chewing on a snack. "I used to hate the clippers of doom...but that was before I realized they were treat vending machines!

A treat vending machine is shown, choose a snack for one claw trimmed!

Alfie is now cuddling his mom. "Now I love getting my nail trims, and my mommy too.
