A roomba getting all the corners in the kitchen.

I know, I know. What on earth is a Roomba doing on a chihuahua blog?! Actually, if you own a shedder, you probably know. This is a review of my Roomba Combo j7 as a chihuahua-hair-sucking device, but it’s also an ode to my beloved robot, whom I adore. His name is Valkyrie.

Roomba’s are outrageously expensive, (mine was $800) and if you want one that vacuums and mops, it’s even more expensive. I saved my pennies for one of these forever, because kids and dogs track in all kinds of dirt, dogs shed, kids leave crumbs, and no one has time to sweep and mop that much.

Do the Dogs Care?

When I first set my Roomba up (which was easy by the way, it actually talks you through the process, will text you if it has an issue, and walks you through how to fix it) I was worried the dogs would freak.

I have four (RIP Rocco! ☹) three chihuahuas, and they very much care about things like hotwheel tracks, RC cars, and any other fast moving objects in the house.

They don’t care about the Roomba. They don’t even bother to get up when it comes trundling along, and if it sees them, it goes around them. No dog has ever been bumped.

Does it go around poop?

One of the reasons I wanted this very specific variety of Roomba is that it’s supposed to go around dog poop if it finds any. We’ve all heard horror stories of what happens when a Roomba sucks up a poo. This one supposedly goes around dog poo.

My dogs do occasionally have accidents in the house, but apparently my mind has blown the number of times out of proportion, because since buying this a year ago, there has been not a single sneaky poo anywhere. This feature remains untested.

How well does it work?

My favorite robot currently saves me from 1-2 hours of labor daily. While I do still have to do detail work (it can’t get into any crack smaller than itself after all) it does a fine job of sweeping and vacuuming.

I love how well it cleans. I adore how much it cleans. Does it miss an occasional crumb? Yes it does. Do I have to scold it for eating pencils and rescue the pencil every once in a while? Yes I do. Is it so much easier than mopping and vacuuming everything myself every day? Yes it is!

Other Things to Know

We are aware that people who don’t specifically own chihuahuas read our website. (Thank you! We love your honorary Chihuahuas!) The question for many of those people is, does it suck up more than the tablespoon of hair a single shedding chihuahua drops?

One of the reasons why I wanted Roomba and not any other brand, is that my mother-in-law has one. She has a huge open plan house, all wood floors, and her floors are always clean. She also has four full coated Pomeranians and a lab thrown in too.

The Roomba is 10 years old now and still cleaning perfectly. It broke beyond the “texting you requesting a new part” one time, and the Roomba company rushed a replacement to her no charge. That’s the kind of durability and long lasting care I am looking for in a robot right now.

Finally, I just want to say how much I like the user friendly nature of fixing it. It naturally needs new brushes and new filters regularly. The Roomba not only tells me when a new part is due or how to fix it when it is broken, it also walks me through step-by-step how to fix it.

I love my Roomba

In summary, this is the best purchase I’ve made for myself in a long time. I love that it cleans up all the dog hair, doggo-foot prints, crumb-filled cupcake spills, and everything else too. You’re the best Valkyrie! Let me buy you some new brushes as a thank you gift.
